Maison de Mâitre
Escape. Live. Enjoy.
The house is a classic end of the 19th century stone maison de mâitre, a former master house of a small estate. The architecture is simple: four main rooms downstairs, and four main rooms upstairs, with a center hallway extending front to back on both floors. The upstairs rooms are bedrooms, while the downstairs rooms consist of a living room (salle de séjour), dining room (salle à manger), kitchen (cuisine) and utility room.
Open, wood-beamed ceilings show throughout the house except in the dining room, where the ceiling is plastered with a center ornamental rose in the bourgeoise style, with a 1920s French art deco style chandelier, and the master bedroom upstairs, which also has a plastered ceiling. The floor downstairs consists of a warm, locally produced terra cotta tile that was installed by the previous owner some 30 years ago. The floors upstairs are knotted pine plank flooring. The main bathroom is upstairs, with two sinks, toilet and bidet, shower stall and tub. Downstairs is a half bath accessible from the center hallway.
Dream Kitchen: Our wonderful neighbors referred to our kitchen as the "Hollywood kitchen" because it has all of the features that you are likely to see in fine homes in the US: granite countertops (the granite imported from Africa), stainless steel appliances, matching dish-drawer dishwashers, side-by-side American style refrigerator freezer, six burner gas stove, built-in oak cabinets, and a center island with a breakfast counter and three stools for friends and neighbors who stop by to sip a café, or a glass of Sauterne.
The Grounds: The grounds consist of 1.4 hectares (3.45 acres), with three additional buildings, a garage (grange), which is perfect for storage and parking, a pool house (see below), and a smaller stone shed used only to store wood. The setting is graced by massive century oak trees, occasional deer, and resident owls who usher in the night. At night, a canopy of stars graces the property, and gentle breezes waft into the open upstairs windows. The sunrise breaks gently into the bedroom windows on the front side of the house, and sets on the back side.
The swimming pool (5 x 10 meters) was one of the first to be installed in the area, and has been completely restored with a repaired concrete structure, new fiberglass interior facing, and all new plumbing, pump, filtration and saline systems. The water glistens to a pale blue aquamarine under the sun, and is swimmable during the late spring, summer and early fall months. The pool is surrounded by expansive stone decking and an open pool house that is ready to be finished into a formal guest house.
This beautiful home is shown by appointment only.
