For the past two years, the 4 women of Sweet Dream Mountain Farm have transformed a house with some land into a fully operational, Certified Organic, heritage breed, grassfed and grass-finished, family farm. We have imported breeds to our farm from all over the country (as far as California and Washington!) because not only does the use of heritage breeds keep the world from losing their valuable genetics, but because the older species do wonderfully on grass without any grain supplement. We have purchased only as many animals as the farm can support (with offspring) - meaning that the farm provides all their pasture and all their winter hay, which we harvest from the land with our two Belgian horses using horse-drawn equipment. We are organic because of the overwhelming health benefits of a system without anitbiotics, hormones, or chemicals; this dream was meant first of all to support our family, then to feed to outside customers. We are grassfed because of the incredible health benefits of the meat, but also because we wish to be self-sufficient - needing only what our land could provide for us.
The lengthy process of researching breeds, importing them to the farm, finding equipment, constructing a system that fit together all that we want (to our knowledge, there is not one other farm we have seen that does everything we do), building barns and fencing, creating a logo and website, finding customers who wanted our products (by far the easiest accomplishment on this list) - this is what we've completed. Ideally, we would love for someone to come in and continue where our work has left off - with all our notes and experiences working in their favor. I invite you to read more about our farm to see whether you would like to continue our dream.
Our farm is 53 acres of certified organic land with a stunning 4 bedroom house and 2 full barns. In front of the house is a 17 acre parcel of certified organic pasture, currently setup with high-tensile fencing appropriate for keeping in all farm animals. To the side is another 13 acre parcel of certified organic pasture, with the same fencing. Behind the house are 23 acres of woods, which we have also brought through the certification process, because we run our pigs through there to root around the undergrowth.
Our farm has grown famous for having some of the best views in Rensselaer County. Our front porch and pasture land overlooks the Taconic Mountains to the south, the foothills of the Adirondacks to the west, and the Green Mountains in Vermont to the east. In spring, the first bloom of new growth can be seen in the bright green of the leaves within the nature preserve that spans the largest of the Taconic Mountains in our view. During the summertime, the dark hues of green overwhelm the mountains, and little farms in the valley are seen with their herds grazing the grasses. The fall is most wonderful of all - the leaves fairly explode with every hue of red, yellow and orange. All you can see for miles are bright colors.
Our stunning, custom designed Cape style home is 10 years old with 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, a formal dining room, an eat-in kitchen, a den, and a living room with the most beautiful brick fireplace. The home has a wrap-around porch where you can sit in an old rocker and take in the view of our pastures and mountains. Family tradition dictates a cup off coffee on the front porch to begin the day before beginning our morning chores.
We have an attached 2 car garage, over which is built the 4th bedroom, which really can serve as a separate apartment. We have a 13' x 38' deck on the back of the home that looks over our landscaped yard out into the woods, giving a feeling of seclusion. The deck is perfect for barbequing or for grabbing a book and lounging as the wind blows through the leaves.
From the deck, one can walk on a built-up crushed stone path to a spring fed pond with an island (to allow the ducks and geese a safe haven to hatch their young).
To the left of the pond is our 64' x 64' newly constructed pole barn, complete with tack and feed rooms, running water, electric and phone, and frost free automatic waterers in each stall. The main section of the barn has a hook and track system to handle loose hay (which we bring in with our draft team). On each side of the 4000 sq. ft. barn are sectioned off stalls for the larger animals.
Back at the house, to the right of the attached garage is a 48' x 30' equipment barn with water and electric. The barn had originally been used as a workshop, so there is the equipment in place to install a woodburning stove, and the inside is heavily insulated - making it a perfect spot to set up a temporary stall for sick or birthing animals. We watched our first foal come into the world and imprinted her within these walls. The barn has an 11' wide overhead door with electric door opener, making it a convinient space to store our tractor, lawn tractor, and various other equipment. Right outside the barn you will see our hitching post - one of two on the property, which makes for easy hitching up of our draft horses, or saddling up our quarterhorses for an afternoon ride.
Our home was custom designed by Gary Tilley, a resident architect in the area, with his cousin, James Cottrell, for whom he was building the home. Every detail was meticulously selected with class, beauty, and comfort as the most important impressions to attain. The oak casement moldings, hardwood floors, and 6 panel oak doors were taken from trees which they logged in the backyard - a truly unique feature. Every room in the house has a spectacular view, whether of woods or pasture or mountains. Even our bathroom on the second floor has a view (arguably the most beautiful view in the house). The house has a very connected flow, and the living room/entry area has cathedral ceilings of about 25 ft so that one can look up to the 2nd floor landing with it's 2 bedrooms and 1 bath. When we purchased the house, we were told that upon looking at the plans that Emma Jane Cottrell (James' mother) added at least one more closet to every room, saying, "You can never have enough storage space." As a result, there is more storage in this house than in any other house we've seen, including walk-in nooks in both upstairs bedrooms that are perfect for little offices, playrooms, or simply storage. Each one of us have our favorite aspects of the house - you will need to come visit to pick your own!
As we enter the house on the first floor from the front entrance, we start with a 13' x 15' entryway, which includes a wood stairway going upstairs (with acorn carving details on the railing), hardwood floors, and vaulted, cathedral ceilings. To the left is the 24' x 25' family room with hardwood floors and 60" windows. To the right is the 13' x 12' formal dining room with hardwood floors, a chandelier, and more 60" windows that allow you to enjoy the views while dining.
Straight ahead is the 15' x 20' living room with hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, and the showpiece of the room, a beautiful brick fireplace made with autumn blend bricks. It has a marble hearth, an oak mantel that wraps around the fireplace on three sides and a Hearthstone woodstove insert. We heat our house primarily with this woodstove, though the radiant floor oil heat is a backup. The living room is very bright, very open - looking out of large French doors and large windows onto the back deck, creating nearly one whole wall of glass. During the fall, the spectacular reds, oranges, and yellows of the leaves in the wooded backyard feel as though they are right in the living room with you. The cathedral ceiling opens to the second floor landing so that you can see both upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom, as well as the wooden banister. There is a ceiling fan in the top of the cathedral ceiling which does a lot to cool down the house during the hot summer months. Off of the living room is the 12' x 15' master bedroom with wall-to-wall carpeting, one large walk-in closet and two extra long closets each with twin wooden bi-fold doors. The master bath has ceramic tile floors, a linen closet, double sink, shower unit, and a Swirl Away whirlpool tub built into the bay window, so that you can relax your day away by candlelight and starlight during the night. It's after such an experience that you enjoy the radiant floor heating throughout the first floor more than ever!
Back out into the living room and up the stairs at each end of the hallway are 12' x 12' mirror-image bedrooms with wall-to-wall carpet, two full closets each, and a separate 12' x 4' room in each bedroom - perfect for a secret office, nook, playroom or dollhouse away from the rest of the world! Also along the hallway is the upstairs bathroom "with a view." A must-see! The view of the living room and the backyard forest from the landing is breathtaking.
Back downstairs and through the dining room is the 22' x 13' eat-in kitchen, with a back door as well as a hallway to the garage and the last bedroom (apartment). 12" x 12" ceramic tiles were used on the floor. The kitchen features an island cabinet with a butcher block counter top and a GE Cook Top stove. The kitchen is lined with many oak cabinets, including a unique folding pantry with opens to create triple the space of a usual pantry, as well as a lazy susan. Other appliances include a built-in GE oven and GE refrigerator complete with water and ice dispenser on the outside of the door, as well as a Miele dishwasher. While eating at the kitchenette table, you can see out the sliding doors onto the back deck and into the woods, complete with bird feeder which remains quite busy in the winter months. Just off the kitchen is a 1/2 bath, a short hallway with two large closets (one with washer and dryer!); both have wooden twin bi-fold doors. At the end of the hallway is a door that leads to the 25' x 24' oversize garage (fits a pick-up truck, GMC van, 2 freezers and 2 workbenches!) with two 9' doors complete with electric door openers. Above the garage is a large 23' x 10' bedroom with wall-to-wall carpets, two full sized closets with wooden bi-fold doors, a full bath with shower, and a window seat to gaze over the sideyard and paddock. The colors were chosen to bring the outside inside - the carpeting is a plush grass green and the walls a light sky blue. A beautiful antiqued stained glass light fixture and ceiling fan combination adds the final touch to this private haven. This room offers many possibilities - including that of a separate rented apartment, in-law apartment, guest suite, or semi-private college student room. It even has its own electric panel c/b box.
The basement is full and unfurnished with concrete walls and steel I beams supporting the home. There is outside access to the basement via a storm door and an area that is used as a root cellar. There are two 275 gallon oil tanks piped together so that one can purchase enough oil to get through the winter while prices are cheap in the summer. The basement is so huge and storage is so plentiful throughout the home that we use half the basement as a "party room" complete with pool table, couches, chairs, TV, work out equipment, and punching bad, and the other half as storage.
